This book is designed to give the history student a comprehensive picture of the period under consideration and at the same time to provide the detail necessary for examination work. At Ordinary Level the work meets the needs of those pupils capable of a full treatment of the period. For those who omit History at Ordinary Level and proceed straight to the Sixth Form course the book should meet the needs of the rather sharp transition. I hope the Advanced Level student will not only find the book helpful but will be add equately guided to further reading.
The book-list at the end is a selection from the older standard works and some of more recent date. The questions are directly related to the text of each chapter.
Ireceived much help and encouragement in the preparation of the original edition of this book, and i must especially record my appreciation of very helpful criticism by the following: Mr. T. S. Turner of the Commonwealth Grammar School, Swindon, Mr. F. Modral of Loughborough Grammar School, Mr. R. C. Smith, Headmaster, Ebbw Vale Grammar School, Mr. Charles Blount of King Edward's School, Birmingham, and Dr. E. J. Fisher of Harrogate Grammar School. I am particularly indebted to Mr. L. W. White, Headmaster of Becken ham Grammar School, for his careful reading of the proofs of the original edition and for his invaluable help in the preparation of this revised and up-dated edition.
