A common migrant, usually seen in non-breeding plumage. Except for the white forehead, the head is grey-black with a dark spot in front of the eyes. The wings and back are grey and rest of body (including rump) is white. Immature is browner than adult with a broad white collar. Best separated from similar Whiskered Tern, C. hybridus, (not illustrated) in flight by white rump and contrasting grey upperparts and wings.
